What Our Customers Say
What Cause Shower Leaks?
Damaged grout and silicone cause most bathroom and shower leaks. Cracked grout breaks down from water pressure and normal wear. Water then seeps behind the tiles.
Worn silicone seals around shower screens and corners can also allow water to escape. The silicone may peel, lift, or crack over time.
The most serious leaking is caused by damage to a shower or bathroom’s waterproof membrane. Once this barrier fails, moisture and then mould can spread through floors and walls. The only solution with a broken membrane is to strip the old tiles and membrane, lay new water proofing, and lay new tiles.

Signs of a Leaking Shower
Leaking showers create serious problems that start small but grow into major damage over time:
- Water stains are a clear sign of a leaking shower. We often see these stains on ceilings or walls near the bathroom area.
- Peeling paint around the shower or in adjoining rooms indicates moisture damage. The paint may bubble or flake off completely.
- Musty odours signal trapped moisture and potential mould growth. This smell becomes stronger in humid conditions.
- Loose tiles or spongy flooring under our feet shows water damage beneath the surface. The floor may feel soft or unstable.
- Visible mould appears on grout lines, ceilings, or walls. We typically see black or green spots in these areas. Damp or stained walls and skirting boards near bathrooms are clear indicators that require immediate attention.

Frequently Asked Questions
Homeowners often have questions about shower leak detection, repair processes, and costs.
How can I find the source of a shower leak?
- Persistent mould
- Musty smells
- Cracked grout
- Hollow-sounding tiles
- Dampness in adjoining rooms
- Water damage on a ceiling below the shower
What materials are best sealing shower leaks?
Essential Bathrooms uses 100 percent waterproof epoxy grout for ceramic or porcelain tiles. This material creates a complete seal at the tile level to stop water from penetrating. We then use high-quality silicone sealants work best for sealing joints and corners. Silicone is made for wet areas and is mould resistant.
We also check that decaying of the old grout has not caused a break in the waterproof membrane that sits under the tiles in your bathroom and other wet areas like your laundry. The membrane creates a barrier to keep water from reaching structural elements. If the membrane is damaged, more extensive repairs may be needed.
What is the average cost for shower leak repair services?
Repair costs vary based on the leak’s location and severity. Surface-level resealing jobs cost less than waterproofing repairs that need tile removal or structural work.
Can I regrout my shower myself?
Regrouting a shower requires a skilled tradie with proper tools, materials, and patience to ensure a clean, waterproof finish. A poor regrout can cause water to leak through the cracks, mould growth, damage to the water proof lining, and could cost thousands to repair.
How long does it take to fix a leaking shower?
Simple resealing jobs can be done within hours, depending on the moisture content under the tiles. These repairs involve removing old sealant and applying new waterproof materials. You should then allow time for proper curing of sealants and adhesives.
More complex repairs that need tile removal or waterproofing may take several days. The repair timeline also depends on the weather conditions. Some products need specific temperature and humidity for best results.
Can a leaking shower cause structural damage if left unrepaired?
Water can weaken floor joists and wall framing over time. This damage becomes expensive to repair and may compromise your home’s safety.
Continuous moisture exposure causes wood rot in timber structures. Metal components can also corrode when they stay wet. Mould growth from ongoing leaks can also create health concerns.
Is regrouting a shower worth it?
Regrouting a shower makes the tiles look fresh and clean. It can fix the water leaks and prevent water damage to the walls and floor. Regrouting is also more cost-effective than full tile replacement or extensive repairs.
While regrouting is more cost effective than full tile replacement, it only works if the shower area is dry when the sealant is applied. If there is an underlying leak or mould, the tiles and water proofing may need to be replaced first.
